My Landscape Photography Gear

This is the gear I currently use for landscape photography and landscape astrophotography. Over the years, I've found that the best landscape photography kit isn't always the one with the highest specifications or the absolute best image quality. Instead, it's the one that balances image quality, versatility, portability, and practicality for the way you actually photograph.
Depending on the location, distance, and conditions, I typically work from one of two configurations: a versatile Two-Lens Kit that prioritizes simplicity, versatility, and lower weight, or a Three-Lens Kit built around dedicated wide-angle, standard, and telephoto zooms when image quality and flexibility are the higher priorities.

Camera
Nikon Z7 II
The Nikon Z7 II remains my camera of choice for landscape photography. Its 45.7-megapixel sensor delivers excellent image quality, strong dynamic range, and plenty of resolution for cropping and large prints. I also appreciate features such as ISO 64, automated focus stacking, weather sealing, and a user experience that I find particularly well suited to landscape photography.

Two-Lens Kit
When size, weight, and simplicity are priorities, this is the configuration I use.
Tamron 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2
The Tamron 16-30mm covers my wide-angle landscape photography while also serving as a capable landscape astrophotography lens thanks to its fast f/2.8 aperture. It offers an excellent balance of image quality, portability, and value.

Nikon Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR
The Nikon Z 28-400mm is what makes this kit possible. Rather than carrying separate standard and telephoto zooms, it provides coverage from wide-angle to super-telephoto in a single lens. This allows me to cover an enormous range of focal lengths while keeping the overall kit compact and easy to carry.

Three-Lens Kit
When image quality and flexibility are higher priorities, this is the configuration I use.
Nikon Z 14-30mm f/4 S
The Nikon Z 14-30mm f/4 S is one of my favorite lenses for landscape photography. It delivers excellent image quality while remaining relatively compact, and its ability to accept standard 82mm filters makes it more practical in the field than the larger Nikon Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S.

Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 S
The Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 S has become a core part of my landscape photography kit. It combines excellent image quality with an extremely useful focal range, making it one of the most versatile lenses in Nikon's lineup.

Nikon Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S
The Nikon Z 100-400mm allows me to isolate distant subjects, simplify compositions, and capture scenes that would be impossible with a wider lens. Combined with outstanding image quality throughout the zoom range, it's the telephoto lens I reach for when image quality is the priority.

Astrophotography Lenses
For dedicated landscape astrophotography, I switch to fast prime lenses.
Nikon Z 20mm f/1.8 S
The Nikon Z 20mm f/1.8 S is my primary astrophotography lens. Its fast aperture and wide field of view make it an excellent choice for photographing the Milky Way and expansive night-sky landscapes.

I also like having access to a fast 35mm lens for astrophotography. It provides a different perspective than an ultra-wide lens and is particularly useful for creating high-resolution panoramic images of the night sky.

The Nikon Z 50mm f/1.8 S is another lens I occasionally use for nightscape photography, but usually on a startracker. The narrower field of view can create unique compositions while still providing excellent low-light performance.
