Sony A7R VI vs Sony A7R V - Image Quality Comparison
Introduction
How much better is the image quality from the Sony A7R VI compared to the Sony A7R V?
To find out, I compared a series of side-by-side RAW images captured with both cameras to evaluate resolution, high ISO performance, shadow recovery, highlight recovery, color, and overall image quality. The Sony A7R V already produces an incredible amount of detail with its 61-megapixel full-frame sensor, while the newer Sony A7R VI increases the resolution to 66.8 megapixels and introduces a fully stacked sensor. The big question is whether those changes translate into noticeably better images.
For this comparison, all images were captured in RAW format using the Sony 70-200mm F/4 Macro G OSS II lens. Testing included base ISO landscape images, high ISO comparisons up to ISO 25,600, underexposure recovery tests, and overexposure recovery tests.

ISO Performance: Across the ISO range, noise performance was extremely similar between the two cameras. As ISO increased, both files became progressively noisier at roughly the same rate, and I did not see a consistent noise advantage for either camera through most of the range.
Color Differences: Some subtle color differences appeared between corresponding RAW files even with the white balance and color profile matched. These differences were not consistent from one image to another. In some examples the Sony A7R VI appeared slightly warmer or more magenta, while in others the Sony A7R V leaned more toward magenta or green. The differences were generally minor and neither camera showed a clear overall color advantage. Some of these variations may also be influenced by the way Lightroom renders RAW files from the two different sensors.
Shadow Recovery: Both cameras performed extremely well when recovering images underexposed by three stops, with very little difference in visible noise. At a more extreme five-stop recovery, however, the Sony A7R VI produced noticeably cleaner shadows with finer-looking noise and less visible color noise. The difference was noticeable when closely inspecting the files, although it was not dramatic.
Highlight Recovery: Highlight recovery was essentially a tie. Both cameras handled a one-stop overexposure without difficulty, while some highlight information began to disappear at two stops. At three stops of overexposure, both cameras lost a significant amount of highlight information with no clear winner between them.
Bottom Line: The Sony A7R V and Sony A7R VI are very, very close when it comes to overall RAW image quality. The A7R VI provides a modest increase in resolution and showed a clearer advantage when recovering severely underexposed shadows, but under normal shooting conditions the differences are fairly small. If you already own the Sony A7R V, the image quality improvements alone are unlikely to be a compelling reason to upgrade. Other improvements and features of the A7R VI may still make the newer camera worthwhile depending on how you shoot.
