Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Camera vs Pro Camera | 200MP vs 100MP
Introduction
Can a 200 megapixel smartphone camera actually compete with a 100 megapixel medium format camera for landscape photography?
To find out, I compared the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra against the Fujifilm GFX 100S using a series of real-world landscape images captured side by side. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra features a 200 megapixel main camera, while the Fujifilm GFX 100S uses a massive 102 megapixel medium format sensor, making this an interesting test of whether megapixel count alone translates into better image quality.
For this comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra was shot using its 200 megapixel main camera while the Fujifilm GFX 100S was paired with the Fujifilm GF 30mm f/3.5 lens to closely match the Samsung’s field of view. Since 200 megapixel capture on the Samsung is limited to JPG, both cameras were compared using JPG files for consistency. Images were captured in real-world landscape photography situations and compared side by side in Lightroom.

Key Takeaways
Detail and Sharpness: The Fujifilm GFX 100S consistently delivered dramatically more detail and clarity throughout the comparison. Fine textures in bark, moss, trees, rocks, and distant mountains appeared noticeably sharper and more defined compared to the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, which often appeared softer when viewed closely.
200MP vs 100MP: Does Resolution Matter? Despite the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra’s 200 megapixel mode, the Fujifilm GFX 100S consistently produced sharper and more detailed real-world results. The extra megapixels alone did not translate into better image quality, with the larger medium format sensor retaining substantially more fine detail and texture.
Real-World Viewing Differences: At smaller viewing sizes or when zoomed out, the differences became much harder to notice. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra still performs impressively for a smartphone and produces very usable landscape images, but once viewed more closely the Fujifilm GFX 100S clearly pulled ahead.
Bottom Line: The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is impressive for a smartphone camera, especially considering its size and convenience. However, when viewed closely there is ultimately no comparison between it and the Fujifilm GFX 100S. The medium format camera consistently delivered significantly sharper images, better texture rendering, and much stronger overall image quality.
