FUJIFILM 55-200mm vs 70-300mm for Landscape Photography
Introduction
How much image quality difference is there between the FUJIFILM 55-200mm and FUJIFILM 70-300mm for landscape photography?
To find out, I compared a series of side-by-side landscape RAW images captured using both lenses on the 40 megapixel FUJIFILM X-T5 to evaluate sharpness, edge performance, contrast, and overall image quality across overlapping focal lengths. Since the 55-200mm can shoot wider and the 70-300mm can reach longer focal lengths, this comparison focuses specifically on where the two lenses overlap, between 70mm and 200mm. The big question is whether the newer 70-300mm lens delivers meaningfully better image quality for telephoto landscape photography.

Key Takeaways
70mm Range Performance: Around the 60mm to 70mm range, the FUJIFILM 55-200mm produced slightly stronger edge sharpness and a bit more contrast, while center sharpness remained extremely close between the two lenses. The differences were subtle and both lenses still performed very well.
80mm to 130mm Range: Across much of the middle focal range, image quality was extremely close. Both lenses delivered strong center sharpness and detail, with only very small shifts in clarity or edge performance depending on the shot. In some examples the 70-300mm pulled slightly ahead, while in others performance appeared nearly identical.
200mm Performance: At 200mm, the FUJIFILM 70-300mm clearly delivered stronger results. The 55-200mm became noticeably softer with reduced clarity and detail, while the 70-300mm remained sharper in both the center and edges of the frame. This became the biggest and most meaningful image quality difference in the comparison.
Moon Test: When photographing the moon, the 70-300mm retained slightly better detail and contrast, reinforcing the stronger long-end performance seen throughout the comparison.
Practical Differences: The 55-200mm remains a good option with advantages that include a smaller size, lighter weight, slightly faster aperture, wider starting focal length, and lower price. However, the 70-300mm adds significantly more reach and stronger image quality at the long end.
Bottom Line: For telephoto landscape photography, the FUJIFILM 70-300mm is the stronger overall recommendation. Image quality is mostly similar at shorter overlapping focal lengths, but the noticeably better 200mm performance combined with the ability to reach 300mm makes it the more compelling lens overall.
