FUJIFILM X-T5 vs FUJIFILM X-T4 - Image Quality Review

Introduction

How much of an image quality improvement, if any, does the Fujifilm X-T5 actually offer over the Fujifilm X-T4?

To find out, I captured a series of RAW images with both cameras and compared them side by side using controlled test chart shots and real-world landscape photography examples. The Fujifilm X-T5 features a newer 40 megapixel sensor compared to the Fujifilm X-T4’s 26 megapixel sensor, making this an interesting comparison for photographers wondering whether the extra resolution comes at the cost of ISO performance or dynamic range.

For this comparison, all images were captured in RAW format using the Fujifilm 16-55mm f/2.8 lens. Test chart images were photographed at multiple ISO values and additional real-world landscape images were used to evaluate detail, shadow recovery, and overall image quality. Aside from minor white balance adjustments, the files were left untouched for comparison.

Key Takeaways

  • ISO Performance: Despite the higher resolution sensor, the Fujifilm X-T5 performs remarkably close to the Fujifilm X-T4 in terms of noise performance. Across multiple ISO values, both cameras produced very similar results, and once X-T5 files were downsampled, the differences became extremely difficult to distinguish.

  • Resolution and Detail: The Fujifilm X-T5 clearly resolves more fine detail thanks to its 40 megapixel sensor. In landscape images, fine details appeared somewhat sharper and more detailed compared to the Fujifilm X-T4, while still maintaining excellent overall image quality.

  • Dynamic Range and Shadow Recovery: Moderate shadow recovery performance looked very similar between the two cameras, with both systems tolerating moderate exposure pushes well. Extreme pushes eventually introduced substantial noise on both cameras, which is expected in real-world editing scenarios.

  • Bottom Line: The Fujifilm X-T5 feels more like a refinement than a dramatic leap in image quality. You gain noticeably more resolution while maintaining ISO performance and dynamic range that remain very close to the Fujifilm X-T4. For photographers who crop heavily, print large, or value extra detail, the X-T5 offers a meaningful advantage.
