FUJIFILM GFX 50S II vs FUJIFILM GFX 100S - Image Quality Review
Introduction
How much of an image quality difference is there between the Fujifilm GFX 50S II and Fujifilm GFX 100S?
To find out, I compared a series of real-world landscape images captured with both cameras to evaluate detail, ISO performance, dynamic range recovery, and overall image quality side by side. While both cameras use medium format sensors and deliver excellent image quality, the key question is whether the GFX 100S’s 100 megapixel sensor provides a meaningful real-world advantage over the 50 megapixel GFX 50S II.
For this comparison, all images were captured in RAW format and compared side by side in Lightroom using real-world landscape examples, ISO testing, and shadow recovery tests. I also included downscaled GFX 100S files to compare image quality at equivalent resolution and better understand how resolution impacts detail and noise performance.

Key Takeaways
Resolution and Detail: The Fujifilm GFX 100S consistently resolved more fine detail thanks to its 100 megapixel sensor. Rock textures, distant details, and landscape elements often appeared sharper and more defined compared to the GFX 50S II, particularly when viewed at 100% magnification.
Downscaled Comparison: When GFX 100S files were downscaled to match the GFX 50S II’s resolution, the differences became quite small. In many scenes, image quality appeared nearly indistinguishable, with only subtle improvements remaining in detail and clarity.
Dynamic Range Recovery: During four-stop and five-stop exposure recovery tests, both cameras handled heavy adjustments surprisingly well. While noise increased after extreme exposure boosts, both files remained highly usable and retained impressive detail and tonal information.
ISO Performance: At full resolution, the GFX 100S often appeared slightly noisier at higher ISO values, likely due to the increased resolution making noise more visible. However, once downscaled to equivalent resolution, the GFX 100S generally produced slightly cleaner results than the GFX 50S II.
Bottom Line: Both cameras produce exceptional image quality and perform extremely well in real-world landscape photography. The Fujifilm GFX 100S offers an edge in detail, resolution, and downscaled noise performance, while the GFX 50S II still delivers outstanding image quality at a lower cost.
