Canon R6 Mark II vs Canon R5 - Image Quality Review
Introduction
How much of an image quality difference is there between the Canon R6 Mark II and Canon R5?
To find out, I compared a series of real-world landscape images captured with both cameras and evaluated detail, ISO performance, and overall image quality side by side. The Canon R6 Mark II features a 24 megapixel sensor while the Canon R5 uses a 45 megapixel sensor, making this an interesting comparison for photographers wondering how much real-world benefit the additional resolution provides.
For this comparison, all images were captured in RAW format and compared side by side in Lightroom using real-world landscape photography examples and ISO tests. Most files were left untouched and unedited, while some downscaled Canon R5 files were also included to compare image quality at equivalent resolution. The Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L lens and Canon RF 100-500mm lens were used during testing.

Key Takeaways
Detail and Resolution: The Canon R5 occasionally resolved slightly more fine detail thanks to its higher resolution sensor, particularly in rock textures and landscape details. However, the differences were often subtle and both cameras produced excellent image quality overall. When viewed at smaller sizes or online, the differences became very difficult to notice.
Downscaled Comparison: When Canon R5 files were downscaled to match the Canon R6 Mark II’s 24 megapixel resolution, image quality became extremely similar. In many scenes, it was difficult to perceive any meaningful difference between the two cameras.
ISO Performance: At full resolution, the Canon R6 Mark II generally appeared slightly cleaner at higher ISO values, while the Canon R5 showed slightly more visible grain. However, once Canon R5 files were downscaled to 24 megapixels, noise performance became very competitive and often looked slightly cleaner than the Canon R6 Mark II.
Bottom Line: The Canon R5 offers more resolution and additional flexibility for cropping or larger prints, while the Canon R6 Mark II delivers excellent image quality and remains more than sufficient for most real-world photography needs. For online sharing and everyday use, the differences are small.
